Bright Colors Party

I feel like the THING right now is to create these lavish parties with all sorts of themes and decorations.
But sometimes, I really just like plain and simple parties...like the ones my mom used to put on.  This one is cute.  Just bright colors.  And look how cute it is.
Wouldn't this m&m hopscotch cake from Martha Stewart go well with it?  Cute ideas.

My Ruffle Collar Tutorial

I got the idea for this shirt {here}...it's just taken me a while to make it. :)
So, here's what I used:
a tshirt from Old Navy and an 1/8 yard of fake silk fabric.
Step 1: cut a strip of fabric the width of what you're wanting the ruffle to be.  Gather the edges with a small gather stitch.
Just so it won't fray down to nothing...cause that's what this fabric does.
Step 2: Roll the end and stitch it, and roll it again and stitch it.  Stitch that, so the rolled edge is underneath at the shoulder seams.
Then, fold the fabric underneath itself in pleats and pin them all the way around the neckline.  I was not precise about these at all... in fact I wanted them to be uneven.
Step3: Stitch the fabric to the shirt on the side where the end will lay underneath the other end.  I did two rows of stitching, because I was a little worried about the fraying edges.  I like the way they look, but I was worried they'd waste away to nothing.
Step 4: Pin the pleats down over the row you just stitched and stitch that side.
Step 5: Stitch the other side of the fabric to the shirt so both the tops and the bottoms of the fabric strips are completely adhered to the shirt.
Ta Da!
Here it is.  I love it.
My husband thinks it "looks home made" ... not the best compliment, but he's referring to the frayed edges which is totally the look I was going for.  If you don't want them frayed, fold the edges under. :)

I've seen those pompoms everywhere, but never like this.  These are made out of tulle!!  So in love with them and the soft, ballarina feel they bring in.

Don't even know what these are, but don't they look yummy?
These little pokadot vases are adorable, don't you think!!?
And I'm loving all the soft pink flowers!!
A table lined in tulle....love.

Living Room Design Consultation

I recently completed this Photo Design Consultation for a client.  Her room was a little odd in shape, being long and skinny, but with walls making corners in awkward places.  She also has a fireplace, but it's placement in the room doesn't allow for seating to be placed around it...so it kind of just sat there all alone.  She also recently built-in some book shelves around her windows opposite the fireplace, and needed help decorating those.  Anyway, here is what I came up with.
If you'll look at this floor plan, you'll notice that the fireplace is not centered between the walls where it sits.  Also, while the windows are centered on their wall, if you stand in front of them and look back into the room, because of how the walls are, they don't match up with the center of the opposite part of the room.  This makes it almost impossible to center furniture so it feels right.  If you center a couch in front of the window, it's not centered in front of the fireplace and visa versa.  If you center a love seat on the wall at the top of this picture, there's not  room for a couch in front of the windows.  All of these problems could be fixed with a sectional because of the corner piece.  The sectional feels centered on the windows, even though it isn't, but it also feels centered on the fireplace, even though it isn't.  It even feels center on that top wall, too!!  It plays tricks on your eye, because of that corner piece built into it.  So a sectional in this place was a life saver.
This is what her space looked like before.  Seating all scooted back into the room near the windows, but nothing around the fireplace.  This makes the fireplace feel a little empty.
Here is what I suggested.  Two small chairs sitting around the fireplace to bring the seating area toward it.  The sectional, as I mentioned, and a large square ottoman to fill the gap in the middle.  I also added a wall of shelves on that blank corner in the back and threw in a few light colored accessories to pop against that red ontop of the fireplace.  We also brought pattern into the room, in the form of red pillows.
This was her picture wall before.  Aside from the furniture arrangement which wasn't working so well, the accessories she had needed some help.
Here is what I suggested.  Bigger pictures, in bigger frames.  Large pieces for this large wall.  And a horizontal spread instead of a vertical one.  Notice the pillows again, and the ottoman, sectional, etc.
Here were her built-ins before.  They did a really great job building them.  Now, they just needed help decorating them.  This is always a challenge.  To make bookshelves look good but not cluttered is very difficult.  It's all about how you place things in relation to other things.
Here is what I suggested.  First, curtains that span the entire window area, instead of one window treatment for each of the three windows.  I also decorated her shelves for her, telling her exactly where to place things and why.  It's difficult, but it looks great, once you get it right.

Oceanside Oasis

If you're lucky enough to live by the ocean, here's how to creat a great oceanside retreat.
Great chaises with cushions are pefect for the beach.
Beaches call for wood furniture, be it painted or stained.
Bright colors are great, especially when paired with bright flowers.  Just make sure it's a few bright colors to work well together.
Or, you can go pale to match the sand.  Monochromatic whites are great.  Use seashells and linen as your inspiration and your decoration.  Either way, it's stunning.
Tropical flowers surrounding the space make it feel like it's always been there.
And you don't always have to have a structure to create a space.  Sometimes, the sandy beach works as well as anything.  Stunning, isn't it?
It's great to have a covered porch.  You can create the perfect outdoor room using wicker furniture and lots of nautical or tropical accents.
Placing outdoor curtains around the space make it feel a bit more private, even though it's opened up to the world.
And one thing I would say is a must, is having some sort of storage for all those beach toys, keeping them close at hand, but easy to put away.
Plus, an outdoor shower, so you can rinse off before coming inside.
