Quiet Book

So, I've been wanting to find a good pattern for a Quiet Book and I was searching online and found this awesome blog: {How to Make a Quiet Book}! This lady is taking us through a step by step process to making a quiet book with all these awesome pages. It's awesome and I'm totally becoming a follower.

One other site I found with instructions was {How to Make an LDS Quiet Book} from the Idea Door.
I really like their idea for the cover - how it just buttons shut.
Future Project!

Great Quiet Book Ideas

{Homemade by Jill} is a blog I recently found with a lot of great ideas on it. Since I am in the process of making a {quiet book} (that will probably take forever!! :), I was most interested in her Quiet Book pages. They're pretty creative! Check them out.

Quiet Book Continued...

To see the origin of this post, click {here}.

I figured I'd just use a binder for the cover and spine of my quiet book I plan on making someday and somehow make it cute. Here is a great idea AND tutorial for doing just that from {Moda Bake Shop}. It's a quilted binder cover! Just what I was looking for! Thank you Maria! I will definitely be using this! I really like the button idea from The Idea Door: So I'll probably just add fabric onto the back cover so it can flap around to the front to button up on the front of the book. I'm so glad I have this pattern though!

Great Quiet Book Ideas

{Nap Time Journal} has some great Quiet Book pages. I like how she suggests looking at Coloring Books to give you ideas for how to set up your pages.
My favorite idea was this one - all kids love tic tac toe!! So cute! And {here} are all her pages in a nutshell.

More Quiet Book Pages

{Sew Can Do} is responsible for making these awesome Quiet Book pages. They are so creative! Unlike anything else I've seen out there.
Snap on the seasons: a sun, cloud, leaf, and a snowman.

For those flower arrangers out there:

The flowers are sewn to pipe cleaners...and that's a vase to put them in.

Feed the fish and help them swim to the top. She goes into detail on how to make these pages, too, so check out the link at the top of this post.

And {here} is another post from her showing more pages.
Making a sandwich.

Counting - you move the buttons across the page as you count. Love this idea!

So cute, huh?

I Spy my ABC's

I saw this great idea on {Obsessively Stitching}

She made an ABC book using fabric with pictures of things that start with each letter.

icecream for "i", moon for "m", you get the idea. I love it!

What a great way to teach your kids the ABC's! Great {Quiet Book} idea, too.

She has a tutorial! Find {part one here} and {part two here}. It looks pretty simple!

And she also has one in a lower case alphabet, {here}. Check her out!! So many good ideas.

My Finished Quiet Book

I've been working on this for a while - just a little bit here and a little bit there. But, I really wanted to get it done finally so I decided to give myself a deadline. I gave this to my son for Christmas, so it's finally finished!
For the cover, I found this quilted fabric at Walmart. I sewed these felt letters to the front as well as some buttons. Then, I ironed-on interfacing to the back to give it some strength. I used the same fabric for the inside of the cover. I punched holes in it where I wanted the rings to go to hold my pages in - and I put grommets in the holes to reinforce them. And then I sewed the two pieces together and put some button holes in. It was really pretty easy. The hole punching was the most difficult part.Page 1 is a clock. The hands can move around because they have grommets in them and they are attached to the clock by using a brad. So you can put them on what time it is.

Page 2 & 3 are a stop light and a map. There is a pocket holding the stop light colors so you match them to the right color on the light.
There is also a pocket holding some little button cars attached to the page by ribbons so they don't get lost. You can drive them around the map. I wanted to use micro machines but I couldn't find any...
Page 4 & 5 are Noah's Ark and a rainbow. The ark has a zipper at the top and inside are all these finger puppets.
This page took the longest to make - by far! Those finger puppets took a long time to make. But they turned out really well, I think.
The rainbow colors are pockets so you can arrange the animals two by two.

Page 6 & 7 are a money bag and a counting page.
There are coins in the bag and the number page has velcro on it, so you can attach the coins. There's also a little envelope to put the 10th coin in.
Page 8 & 9 are a missionary page and Jonah and the whale. The missionary tags are from Deseret Book and they say "Missionary in Training" on them. They are a pin kids can wear.
The whale has a zipper mouth so Jonah can be swallowed by the whale.
Page 10 & 11 are a letter and a mailbox. The envelope has crayons, a note pad and some envelopes in it.
And once the letters are written they can be put in the mailbox which has a pocket on the front.
Page 12 is baby Moses in a basket.
The basket strings are un attached so you have to weave them together to make a basket. And that's the end. We've used it once at church and it helped a little bit. My son's still too young to understand a lot of these activities, but I think he'll be able to use it for a long time. I remember using mine when I was a little girl and for that reason it was really fun to make and to give to him.

My Quiet Book Pages 1 & 2

I'm actually making progress on this thing!! YEAY! My pages are bleached muslin. I cut them using a sheet protector as a pattern so they'll fit in a binder when I'm all finished. I plan on punching three holes and reinforcing them with grommets when I'm all finished. Anyway, These may not actually be the first pages in the book when it's all put together, but they're the first pages I've finished. And they'll open up side by side becasue they kind of go together. I'm trying to make all my pages do that.

This page is a stop sign with a pocket holding matching color circles. The color circles velcro onto the sign. This page is a map. The cars are buttons that are attached to ribbons that are sewn to the page inside the pocket. That way they always stay attached to the page. And all together, they look like this.

I like it. I hope my kids like it someday, as well. Hopefully this page will be more than just fun. Hopefully it will teach them to match colors, and how a stoplight works, and how to read a map. We'll see!

File Folder Fun

My cousin has been telling me about this for a while, but it was really hard to visualize. Thanks to {Our Cozy Nest}, I am finally understanding what these things are. They look pretty simple, and there are a lot of places to get the different folders for free/cheap, it looks like. Pretty good for a no-sew quiet book. :)

Bookshelf

I found some bookshelves that stack the books so the cover is facing out and I think that's a great idea for little kids. Then, they can see what each book is and stacking doesn't have to be so precise. This put me on the lookout for bookshelves like these. I found this one at Land of Nod for a pretty reasonable price:
Walmart sells this taller one that I thought would be more practical because it would hold more books:

As I browsed the Walmart site, I found this one:

I love the idea of storing books in canvas! It got me thinking that I should make a bookshelf with canvas fabric and a wooden ladder. I'd use neutral canvas, and sew fabric to hang as swags between the ladder rungs. Easy to make, the books are front facing, and it's a soft and quiet solution for storing books. Future project!
