Back 2 School Relief Society Activity

In August, we had a Back 2 School night with our Relief Society.  This one was a lot of fun to put together!  To create this vignette, we brought in the portable chalk board from the church, and strung up my Target special bunting that I use for every party.  I also pinned up my book page wreath handmade for me by a friend of mine as a housewarming gift.  Love it!  We stole the stool from under the podium to raise up our vintage school desk one of our members just happens to have, which seemed just a little too small next to that chalkboard, and threw some books and lunch boxes on there for good measure.  BYU even made it to this party in the form of a crate from the Creamery we somehow inherited while we were attending years ago.
We strung jute string across the ceiling and clothespinned and paperclipped flashcards to it to create a school themed bunting.  On the chalkboard, I wrote welcome to class, in true 'first day of school' fashion.

And the podium table was just decorated with a bunch of nicknacks from around my house.
The more I looked at my house, the more I found I could use to make this look like a vintage school room.
Globes were a must.  I put some $1 flags in a vase, and got a pack of pencils and put them in a mason jar.  I had recently bought a slate chalkboard from Hobby Lobby to do the '1st day of school sign' with my son, and wrote Back 2 School on it in chalk.
I also filled a container with scrabble letters, and bought a bunch of cheap rulers to put in a pitcher.  These pinwheels I made using doublesided scrapbooking paper.  I just hot glued them onto scewers.  They don't spin, but they sure look cute!
I used some photo albuns to raise up my vintage lantern, pulled in a vintage clock I have, and at the last second thought it would be a good idea to use a statue of the Savior in our display.
He is, after all, our greatest teacher.
I just love the mix of the neutrals looking like a vintage school room with a little bit of those bright colors still thrown in.  That bucket was filled with bookmarks which we gave the sisters at the end of the night.  Loved the colorful rainbow of ribbon they provided in the display.
I found this quote to go along with our theme, printed it off on cardstock, punched a hole in the top and looped different ribbons through.  Easy peasy!
To make it feel like a school room, we brought in all the classroom tables and put them together, so each table sat six people.
We had set up different displays in the center of each table as well.  Most with bundles of books from my house.
And more pencil bouquets.
At each seat, we placed a notebook for them to take home as well.
These were just the mini composition books Target and Walmart sells during back to school season, with a "Search Ponder & Pray" label stuck to the front of it.  Our last mini class was on studying the scriptures, and this gift tied in with that lesson.
On the side board, we had a back to school bunting hanging, as well as grade level printables found on Pinterest.  Here is another shot of the flashcard bunting we made across the ceiling.  That really made it seem festive!
On this table, there was more stuff from my house.  These giant crayon penny banks were perfect for our display.  I also threw my magnet letters in a few jars - amazing how that classes them up.  Maybe I'll start doing that at home!
More pinwheels - I loved the feel those gave to this activity!  I found this printable (along with most of my other ideas) on {here on Pinterest} and just clipped it to our clipboard.  Had an apothecary jar filled with apples.  And this is actually how I store our blocks.  I love the way they look on top of my kids dresser.  A decoration that can be played with!  Cute and functional are my favorite.
Our dinner that night was a school lunch.  We had veggie cups with rach dip, apples, chip bags, sandwiches, lunch drinks, and rice crispy treats (which didn't make it in time for the picture).
I was surprised at how fast we ran out of chocolate milk!  You're never too old for that stuff, I guess.  However, hardly anyone drank regular milk.  Curious...
When I told my helpers my idea for the food, no one was too excited about it, but it was actually really good!
The display over here consisted of my oversized scissors, some mini trunks, another globe, and a vintage style lantern.
I had fun making these plates.
Just added some paper leaves using double stick tape and voila!  Apple plates!
We had 3 mini classes:
Home Economics - we learned how to make our own laundry detergent.
Mathematics - we learned about Budgeting and Finances
Reading - we learned about studying the scriptures.
All in all, it was a great activity!

Remember Christ - Christmas Advent

If anyone has been following my blog for a while, they know I'm slightly obsessed with Christmas Advents.  I have a ton of posts with different advent ideas.  I love them.

But, I've also had a mission in posting and searching for all these advents.  I once received a Christmas advent which encouraged people to come to know their Savior through reading about Him in scripture.  Each day focused on a different virtue He posessed.  Somehow, I misplaced that advent and have been searching for it ever since.

Today, my search is finally over.  Of all the Christmas advents, I think this one is most meaningful and important.  Read a scripture every day and Come to know Christ better.  In the future, I might change the order of these scriptures around a bit, but I am so happy to have found this at {Tip Junkie}!  What I'd really love to do is have a tree ornament to go with each virtue.  Willowtree has a lot that would work.  I've also included links to some ideas.

Press Forward and Be Steadfast Lesson Handout

"Wherefore, ye must press forward with a steadfastness in Christ, having a perfect brightness of hope, and a love of God and of all men. Wherefore, if ye shall press forward, feasting upon the word of Christ, and endure to the end, behold, thus saith the Father: Ye shall have eternal life."
And we talked about what each action means.  So, the kids would understand exactly what they need to be doing to get to the ultimate goal of eternal life.
For "steadfast" I used {this object lesson from Jenny Smith}.
Then I gave them Everlasting Gobstoppers to represent (everlasting) Eternal Life.

Christs' Guidance vs Satan's Deceptions Lesson Handout

So, basically the lesson contrasted Satan's deceptive ways that lead to destruction with Christ's plain ways that lead to ultimate freedom and salvation.
So, going off of this scripture:
"And there are also secret acombinations, even as in times of old, according to the combinations of the bdevil, for he is the founder of all these things; yea, the founder of murder, and cworks of darkness; yea, and he leadeth them by the neck with a flaxen cord, until he bindeth them with his strong cords forever." {2 Nephi 26:22}
I spoke about a rope, which when you break it down and pull it apart is made up of many strands of flax.  These little strands are so soft and almost comforting and very easy to break.  I told them, this is how Satan catches us, but as time goes on and on, if we continue following after him, he builds an builds on those single pieces of flax until he has us bound in huge chains of rope.
I contrasted this with the way Christ works and how as we follow after Him and partake in the gift of the atonement, we become more and more free.  Through Christ, we gain freedom.  And the amazing thing is that He gives this to us freely, which is good because there is no way we could ever pay Him back.  All He asks is that we follow Him and live righteously.
So, I gave them rope candy - twizzlers pull and peals to emphasize the significance of how a small piece of rope isn't very binding, but it becomes binding when combined with other small pieces.
To it I attached a tag that said: "Remember: While Satan's Ropes Will Bind Us, Christ Will Always Set Us Free."

Delight in the Words of Isaiah Lesson Handout

Planning the lesson I read this statement by Elder Boyd K. Packer:
“The Book of Mormon is a book of scripture. It is another testament of Jesus Christ. It is written in biblical language, the language of the prophets.
“For the most part, it is in easy-flowing New Testament language, with such words as spake for spoke, unto for to, with and it came to pass, with thus and thou and thine.
“You will not read many pages into it until you catch the cadence of that language and the narrative will be easy to understand. As a matter of fact, most teenagers readily understand the narrative of the Book of Mormon.
“Then, just as you settle in to move comfortably along, you will meet a barrier. The style of the language changes to Old Testament prophecy style. For, interspersed in the narrative, are chapters reciting the prophecies of the Old Testament prophet Isaiah. They loom as a barrier, like a roadblock or a checkpoint beyond which the casual reader, one with idle curiosity, generally will not go.
“You, too, may be tempted to stop there, but do not do it! Do not stop reading! Move forward through those difficult-to-understand chapters of Old Testament prophecy, even if you understand very little of it. Move on, if all you do is skim and merely glean an impression here and there. Move on, if all you do is look at the words. …
“… The Lord had a purpose in preserving the prophecies of Isaiah in the Book of Mormon, notwithstanding they become a barrier to the casual reader.
“Those who never move beyond the Isaiah chapters miss the personal treasures to be gathered along the way” (in Conference Report, Apr. 1986, 76–77; or Ensign, May 1986, 61
So, I brought a "Treasure Box" that I actually already had as a decoration in my house and set it on the table where they could see during it the whole lesson.
At the end of the lesson I read the last part of that quote from Boyd K. Packer:
"They loom as a barrier, like a roadblock or a checkpoint beyond which the casual reader, one with idle curiosity, generally will not go.
“Those who never move beyond the Isaiah chapters miss the personal treasures to be gathered along the way”
At which point I told them I brought them treasures!
I used Hershey's nuggets and stacked three on top of each other to look like bars of gold. Then I tied on the last bit of Elder Packer's quote that talks about the treasures we'll miss if we don't move through the Isaiah chapters.
Simple, but effective way to help the kids remember what the lesson was about.  And, they loved the treasures of course.
